Cancer Centre: $25 million
The Cancer Centre is improving care for oncology patients and delivering increased access to patient support services at the RHH.
Jointly funded by the State and Australian Governments, the Cancer Centre is increasing the RHH's capacity to meet current and future demand for cancer services.
The Cancer Centre building works on the Campbell Street side of the RHH has seen the installation of a new facade that brings freshness and light to the hospital.
Radiation Oncology
A third bunker has been built to enable the second linear accelerator machine to be replaced without disrupting patient services. A bunker is a room with very thick walls to contain the radiation.
The third bunker includes a multi-panelled wall mural of a photograph taken on the East Coast of Tasmania. The ceiling in the third bunker features a series of light panels that display the sky and cherry and apple blossom overhead.
The new linear accelerator (LINAC) is providing improved radiation therapy for Tasmanians. A linear accelerator is a radiation procedure which delivers high-energy x-ray treatments that destroy cancer cells while sparing surrounding normal tissue.
Day Chemotherapy Unit
The Day Chemotherapy Unit was relocated in spring 2012 to a newly renovated ward of the RHH Level 8 A Block.
The new Unit has been designed to provide additional treatment chair capacity with more space for patients, families and carers. On arrival, patients are greeted by a bright and open reception area and spacious waiting room, including a patient kitchen.
Generously-sized patient treatment bays provide increased privacy while maintaining the potential for patient-to-patient social interaction, an important aspect of well-being.
Outpatient Cancer Centre
The new multi-disciplinary outpatient cancer centre provides shared clinical and administrative space where patients can be treated in one clinic irrespective of care provision.
Cancer Support Centre
The Cancer Support Centre is a new facility for people affected by a diagnosis of cancer. The Cancer Support Centre is a non-clinical place, designed to provide information and support to assist with a person's understanding of the diagnosis, treatment options and the personal impacts.
