Art Makes Redevelopment Kids-Friendly

Young patients are being involved in the RHH Redevelopment through 'The New Hospital and Me' drawing project which was officially launched on 7 October 2015.

Being in hospital can be a difficult time, particularly for kids.

Art is an excellent way to step out of the stress and worry of being at the hospital.

It is also an excellent way to make the hospital a nicer place during construction.

New patient areas are being created through refurbishments to accommodate services moving from
B-Block prior to demolition.

Hoarding has been installed to enclose construction zones in the hospital. The hoarding creates impersonal walls of white board. With art work, it makes the hospital warm and inviting during construction.

Young patients were asked to draw something that's important to them about the new K-Block building.

Six year old Matilda's drawing is about the new K-Block, the children's ward and the helipad.

Fifteen year old Abi's drawing '…is a reminder to try to think about relaxing thoughts when admitted to hospital and [you] are feeling frightened. It's also a reminder that you are safe.'

Art works are accompanied by information about the artist and their work.

The young artists drew their pictures during paediatric oncology outpatient clinics, in ambulatory care or while they were inpatients on ward 3A. A number of children have spent extended periods over many years receiving treatment at the RHH. Young people contributing drawings age between 3 and 15 years.

A 25-bed paediatric unit will be accommodated on level 6 of the new K-Block along with a new 16-bed adolescent unit. Both units will have access to a secure rooftop garden and an inpatient school.
